The Following is a guest post by Luke who offered his views on each game from the round. If you are interested in having your thoughts published on the AFLSpace site, contact me. Many thanks to Luke for providing this great review.

We’ve reached the “split round” which feels as good a time as any to check-in on how an 2010 All-Australian team may be looking. I’ve also included a quick recap of the results from this round.

B Jarrod Harbrow Brian Lake Sam Gilbert

Harbrow and Lake have been terrific for the Dogs this season, with Harbrow impressing with his run and zip from defense, whilst Lake is an easy selection at full back. In the other back pocket is Sam Gilbert, one of the main reasons the Saints have maintained their good form in the absence of Nick Reiwoldt.

HB Brendan Goddard Harry Taylor Luke Hodge

I consider Goddard and Hodge to be automatic selections on the back flanks, whilst it was a bit harder to lock in a centre half back at this stage of the season, with Harry Taylor getting the nod ahead of some others given his consistency in the position for the Cats.

C Michael Barlow Lenny Hayes Leigh Montagna

Each year it is difficult to narrow down a centre line and 2010 is proving to be no different. I can’t look past Dockers rising star Michael Barlow who is ranked 6th in average disposals and making a massive impact in the West. A pair of Saints – in Hayes and Montagna – fill the other two spots in the centre for their ball-getting ability and disposal efficiency.

HF Paul Chapman Matthew Pavlich Brent Harvey

Paul Chapman is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career and would be a lock in anyone’s All-Australian side. Pavlich is 4th in the goal kicking but impressively he averages the most disposals of the top 10 goal kickers so far this season. Brent Harvey has been amongst the best players of the season over the past couple of months.

F James Podsiadly Jack Riewoldt Eddie Betts

Podsiadly has been a revelation for Geelong and is a deserved All-Australian selection. Jack Riewoldt wins the full forward spot with a league best 48 goals so far. The other forward pocket was a tough call, with a number of players putting their hand up. I’ve awarded the position to Eddie Betts for being dangerous around goal in addition to his outstanding defensive skills.

R Aaron Sandilands Gary Ablett Chris Judd

Aaron Sandilands has dominated in the ruck for the Dockers and leads just about every statistical category compared to other eligible ruck contenders. There is no need for discussion regarding the selections of Ablett and Judd in the on-ball division – they are both superstars in every sense of the word.

INT Mark Jamar, Lance Franklin, Dane Swan, Steve Johnson

Jamar has been superb for the Dees in the ruck, and is the obvious second ruck selection for this team. Franklin has missed 3 games but has been sensational recently in the Hawks resurgence and a handy player off the bench. Dane Swan is second only to Ablett in total disposals and must be acknowledged for his work rate. I don’t rate Steve Johnson as highly as most, but I don’t mind him on the bench in this team – he is in the top 5 in goals in 2010 after all.

EMG Jimmy Bartel, Corey Enright, Bryce Gibbs

Three guys I found it tough to leave out of the squad of 22, each for different reasons. Bartel is often overlooked in the star-studded midfield of Geelong but has been solid again this season. Speaking of Geelong, Corey Enright continues to do his job superbly week in, week out in defense with very little fanfare. Bryce Gibbs is the other to just miss the cut in this team, but he has continued his improvement and may yet be an All-Australian at years end.

Round 13 – Round Recap

Hawthorn 102 defeated Essendon 86 – Buddy Franklin’s final quarter goal kicking heroics was enough to extend the Hawks winning streak to 6 wins in one of the most entertaining matches of 2010.

Carlton 87 lost to Fremantle 96 – The Dockers powered into the mid-season break with a 9-point win against Carlton in Melbourne, with the margin flattering the Blues after being down big most of the game.

Brisbane 86 lost to Richmond 105 – The Lions struggles continued with a shock home loss to the Tigers at the Gabba in Brisbane.

North Melbourne 129 defeated Port Adelaide 93 – The Power have well and truly checked out for 2010, as the Roos continued their rise up the ladder.

West Coast 59 lost to Western bulldogs 119 – With the Dogs looking to turn the corner entering the second half of the season, they made short work of the Eagles at Subiaco.

St Kilda 70 defeated Geelong 46 – After dominating early, the Cats couldn’t hit the side of a barn in the second half as the Saints exacted some Grand Final revenge with a comfortable 24-point win.

Sydney 71 lost to Collingwood 96 – Collingwood has dominated the Swans in recent years, winning the past 8 encounters since 2006 – with the trend continuing on Saturday night with another victory.

Adelaide 117 defeated Melbourne 73 – The Demons needed a win away from Melbourne on Sunday against the Crows, but their shocking record away from home continued with a deflating loss to Adelaide.

So I leave Melbourne for a little trip to my home town of Warrnambool and all hell breaks loose at the footy! The block buster, grand final rematch has seen 3 players missing some where in the area of 13 – nearly 20 matches depending if they take the decisions of the Match Review Panel’s rulings. Steve Johnson gets weeks for a punch and an elbow to Steve Baker. Steve Baker gets 9 matches for 4 separate incidents on Steve Johnson. Cameron Mooney didn’t want to be left out of the fun and got 2 weeks for hitting Jason Blake in the same game.

It seems very harsh on Baker but you have to take two things into account:

There were 4 seperate incidents and they are added up to come up with the number of weeks he gets.

Each lot of seperate points gets a 50% loading as Baker has missed 5 or more matches via suspenion in the last 3 years (due to hitting Jeff Farmer late in 2007)

Update:

Wednesday: So, after the drama of Monday, Steven Baker originally challenged two of his 4 charges but just before the tribunal case, decided to just challenge the hitting of the injured hand incident. He wasn’t successful in this case and will miss 9 matches.

AFL Tribunal, 5.30pm, Tuesday June 29:

Steven Baker, St Kilda, has been charged with a Level Three striking offence against Steve Johnson, Geelong Cats, at the start of the first quarter of the Round 13 match between St Kilda and the Geelong Cats, played at the MCG on Friday June 25, 2010.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of seven matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 50 per cent to 337.50 demerit points and a three-match sanction.

Steven Baker, St Kilda, has been charged with a Level Two misconduct offence in that he made unreasonable and unnecessary contact with an injured player, Steve Johnson, Geelong Cats, during the first quarter of the Round 13 match between St Kilda and the Geelong Cats, played at the MCG on Friday June 25, 2010.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (two points).

In summary, his previous poor record means that his one-game sanction must remain at one game, even with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of seven matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 50 per cent to 187.50 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 140.63 points and a one-match sanction.

Please note, for where a player has been charged with multiple offences during one match, under the Tribunal guidelines on page eight of the attached document, the points for each offence where the player either accepts a penalty or is found guilty are added together to form a total amount. For each amount of 100 points in the total penalty, there must be one match served as a result.

Cameron Mooney, Geelong Cats, has been charged with a Level Three striking offence against Jason Blake, St Kilda, at the start of the first quarter of the Round 13 match between the Geelong Cats and St Kilda, played at the MCG on Friday June 25, 2010.

In summary, his previous poor record means that his two-game penalty must remain at two games, even with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-game sanction. He has an existing poor record of two matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty by 20 per cent to 270 demerit points. He also has 68.75 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 338.75 points and a three-game sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 254.06 points and a two-game sanction.

Steve Johnson, Geelong Cats, has been charged with a Level Two striking offence against Steven Baker, St Kilda, during the first quarter of the Round 13 match between the Geelong Cats and St Kilda, played at the MCG on Friday June 25, 2010.

In summary, his previous carry-over points from within the last 12 months for an earlier offence means that his one-game penalty must remain at one game, even with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. He has 93.75 points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 218.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 164.06 points and a one-match sanction.

Steve Johnson, Geelong Cats, has been charged with a Level Three striking offence against Steven Baker, St Kilda, during the second quarter of the Round 13 match between the Geelong Cats and St Kilda, played at the MCG on Friday June 25, 2010.

In summary, his previous carry-over points from within the last 12 months for an earlier offence means that his two-game penalty must remain at two games, even with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence drawing 225 demerit points and a two-game sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. He has 93.75 points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 318.75 points and a three-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 239.06 points and a two-match sanction.

Other incidents assessed:

Contact between the Geelong Cats’ David Wojcinski and St Kilda’s Andrew McQualter from the third quarter of Friday’s game was assessed. The panel said that Wojcinski dived in to contest the ball. The Geelong player’s eyes were on the ball at all times and he reaches the ball before contact is made. As he was contesting possession and reached the ball, no further action was taken.

Contact between St Kilda’s Sam Fisher and the Geelong Cats’ Jimmy Bartel from the fourth quarter of Friday’s game was assessed. The panel said Bartel was being attended by club staff after a contest for the ball in the middle of the ground. Fisher was watching the play upfield, and was the closest opponent to the Geelong player. As Bartel prepared to move off the ground, with two club staff in very close proximity to him, Fisher was standing still watching the play upfield, with his eyes not on the Geelong player and staff. From all available vision that was viewed, including vision that was not broadcast during the match telecast, the play downfield then moved at the time that Bartel moves into Fisher’s path to begin leaving the ground. Fisher has his eyes on the play down the ground and steps forward and minor contact is made by Fisher to Bartel. The panel said that Fisher’s focus was play at the end of the ground and the contact was not deemed unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.

Contact between Melbourne’s Brad Miller and the Adelaide Crows’ Patrick Dangerfield from the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game was assessed. Due to the inconclusive nature of the vision available, which could not determine where contact was made to player Dangerfield, no further action was taken.

Quite a few big names out this week with the biggest, especially in DreamTeam and SuperCoach, being Paul Chapman who will miss with a hamstring injury. Josh Fraser is also going to miss but he can’t blame injury like Chappy. He has been dropped and the Pies are going to go up against the Swans with one ruckman. This could be good news for anyone that picked up Jolly in DT/SC and have hung onto him. You would imagine he will ruck for long periods and hopefully put up his scores. The other bad news for many Fantasy Coaches will be the dropping of Jordan Gysberts. If you are like me and have brought him in as a down grade target, lets hope he comes back soon.

Match Review Findings for week 2 available by clicking here

This is the report for the first week of Round 13, 2010 (i.e. the Split round) and although at this stage, from the Matches, there have been no reports, there are at least two big incidents to be looked into in the Blues v Dockers game. Jarrod Waite will have a nervous wait to see if he goes for his hard bump, that appeared high, on Daffield of the Dockers, and Blues skipper, Chris Judd will risk a suspension for elbowing Matthew Pavlich in the head that saw him opened up and need stitches. Both these guys have missed a number of weeks recently and if they get any points this week, more will be added with the amount of loading that they have.

Anyway, shouldn’t be much longer a wait to see if these and other have cases to answer. Say tunned!

UPDATE:

Tuesday midday: No Tribunal this week as everyone accepted that they had been bad boys and will wear there punishments of Weeks, points or dollars!

Monday 6pm: Jake Melksham of the bombers was investigated for an incident that saw Chance Bateman concussed. No reportable offence was detected from the investigation (details here).

NOTE: IF YOUR AFTER THE ROUND 13, 2009 TEAMS CLICK HERE

Round 13 has seen Sydney St Kilda coach, Ross Lyon swing the axe. But who did it really hit and did it possibly just NICK one of the players. The press is a buzz with news that apart from losing Michael Gardiner and Schneider to injury, he has omitted Stephen Milne and Nick Dal Santo. He has brought in four young players in Robert Eddy, Jarry Allen and Ben McEvoy (pictured left) for their first games and brought back the often unlucky David Armitage. Lyon said of the players dropped:

“We were one (win) out of four and we just re-iterated what we had committed to on behavior, core values, whatever you want to call them.

“We just need to live what we want to be seen to stand for.

“Certain players didn’t play to what we committed to in the opinion of the match committee,” Lyon said.
“The system just dictated that we respond.”

Dal Santo is the strangest one of the players dropped. He has a huge rap on him and has been near his career average for possessions. The word is that he hasn’t done enough going the other way and he has been made an example of. So Lyon has to make this stick or else he opens himself up to being the laughing stock of the league. With that in mind, you have to ask why is Dal named as an emergency? Surely he shouldn’t be any chance to come into the team after the reasons that he was dropped? I have a strong feeling that someone in that Saints squad will come out late (there is some word that Robert Harvey could be the one in doubt) and Nick will go in to replace him. This will be a joke and show that the Saints are a rabble especially if the lowly Dockers can get up and win.

In other news, Geelong pair Joel Selwood and Matthew Stokes are in doubt for tomorrows match with West Coast. The word is they are being given a late fitness test before they are on the flight to the West. Will update this when more information is available.
